Another alternative to indirect flat panel detectors is to utilize the technology used in digital cameras, namely CCD (Charge Coupled Device) or CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor). CCDs are well designed for measuring visible light as they are used as sensors in many digital cameras. CCDs also have the advantage that they can be read quickly. Unfortunately, however, the size of the CCD does not match the size of the flat panel detector.
To connect visible light from a scintillator to a CCD or CMOS detector, fiber coupling can be used as a light funnel to transmit light from the larger sized scintillator area down to the smaller sized CCD. Compared to TFT flat panels, not all visible light is concentrated on the CCD, resulting in a slight decrease in efficiency. Lenses or electronic optical couplers can also be used instead of optical fibers to narrow down the signal.
The main advantage of CCD and CMOS technology is read speed, as the electronics in the CCD allow the detector to read faster than conventional TFT arrays. This is especially beneficial for interventional and fluoroscopic imaging where the frame rate (i.e. how many images are taken per second) is more demanding than conventional radiography.
